School Violence

School violence is become a serious problem in recent decades in many countries, especially when weapones such as guns or knives are involved. It includes violence between students, but also between student and school stuff.

School violence wears many faces. It includes gang activity, locker thefts, bullying and intimidation, gun use, assault - just about anything that produces a victim. Violence is perpetrated against students, teachers and stuff, and ranges from international vendettas to accidental killings of bystanders. Often, discussions of school violence are lumped together wth discussions of school discipline generally, as both involve questions of how to maintain order in a school.

This diagram shows us how school violence is unroll in the USA, Virginia

We divide school violence-prevention methods into three classes - measure related to school management (that is, related to discipline and punishment), measure related to enviromental modification (for instance, video cameras, security guards, and uniforms), and educational nad curriculum-based measure (for instance, conflict-resolution and gang-prevention programs). Offcourse all this methods have their advantages and disadvantages.

In Poland in 2006 response to the suicide of a girl after she was sexually molested in school, the Polish Minister of Education, launched a "zero tolerance" school reform. Under this plan, teacher would have the legal statusof civil servants, making violent crimes against them punishable by higher penalties. Head teacher will be, in theory, able to send agressive pupils to perform community service and this students' parents may also be fined. Teachers who fail to report violent acts in school could face a prison sentence.
What do you think about school violence? How we can prevent such situations in schools?

  1. I think that the bigges problem in Polish education system was introducing junior high schools. It was really stupid idea, especially because at the same time in many other countries they were closing such schools because of problem of violence. Now the best way is to return to old, two-schools system. Of courese it will be big financial problem, but children are the future of a country so government should do everything in order to bring up them on a good citizens.
As it's probably last discussion I want to say: thank you very much for shared blogging and of course I wish you no problems on examinations.

  2. Thanks God I have never been a victim of school violence. I can imagine that it's really awful, children can be rextremely cruel. Of course, teachers can harass their pupils too, but I think that it's not as frequent as aggression of the contemporaries. It's sad that in Poland some actions were made AFTER one girl had commited a suicide... We should prevent tragedies. When someone has bad experiences at school, it may have a great influence on his/her whole life. I'm not sure if there is any perfect way to tackle this problem but doing anything is definitely better than doing nothing.

  3. I think authorities should use wide range of methods and reactions to violence at schools involving a strict cooperation with family of a a pupil. Many problems with social behaviour of pupils is being sourcing in family house. Not only in underclass society.

  4. Of course family is important but in school it’s all about teacher to notice that something bad is happening. I believe that atmosphere at school or an authority of a teacher can have great influence on the students. Unfortunately is seems that the most of the teacher are frustrated, don’t like their job and don’t like students. Maybe if their salary was higher they will be more motivated, that’s true. However, when they don’t care, children feels it and don’t care either.

  5. In my opinion the problem of school violence is very difficult to solve. I agree with Michał - only a change of education system could help considerably, but it's not a probable solution for a while. So I think that the persons who could mostly influence on the situation are teachers and principals. They should be more vigilant and focused not only on ladling out knowledge but also on the atmosphere in school.

  6. To tackle this problem, we need to propagate a statement that everyone has the right to be respected and the responsibility to respect others. We should eliminate even insignificant aggression, at first – verbal. But it's a theory only. In practise it's hard to find any working solution.

  7. I think that school violent is very serious problem in schools. There are a lot of very diferent people and many times there are children of all ages. The worst kind of school is Gymnasium.
Prevention is very important, because effect of school violence may be very serious even children can commit suicide. I don't know how we can prevent this event. Children in this age don't want to listen anybody. They haven't any authority. Maybe only one way are severe punishments. I really don't know ...

  8. I fully agree with with expressed worry and concern on school violence and fellings of helplessness. May be as I mentioned before a coherent system gathering parents, psyhologists, special sections in police could solve problems. Strict monitoring and presssure could exlude the most dangerous pupils and protect innocent majority of pupils.

  9. In my opinion school violent is really serious problem in schools and I have no idea how to stop it! But I also think that teachers can influence on the situation becasue they know about every dificult situation in school. But sometimes, for example in high school, teachers are victims to school violent...

  10. Maybe a good solution is division the schools only for boys and only for girls? Boys and girls grow up in different way, so cooperation with boys should be different than cooperation with girls. And maybe this kind of education will reduce tensions...

  11. In my opinion young people think that the only way to improve their status at school is through aggression. They believe thay violence encourages others to respect them. Victims of aggression are often the younger or weaker students.
I think that in schools should be repair a poor relationships between teachers and students. Teachers should be also kind-hearted for poor students. They should also more frequently prise worse students. Teachers have to motivate students to be a good man, because only this behave can improve their life.

  12. I think that bulling and violence in school is a serious crime. Off-course we can't punish pupils like we do in a grown up cases but it is possible to punish bullies- for example ban them from attending in school trips, outdoor activities and so on. The most important indeed is prevention, in which all the workers in school, students and parents should be involved and react instantly for any kind of aggression. Additionally special classes about the communication, manipulation, peer pressure and local conflicts should appear in a timetable.

  13. It isn't only a problem of schools, becuse young-bullies spend somewhere their free time, they have homes or use public transport. This situation which we could notice today is not result of two or three days of lack of supervision. Mistakes and deficiencies had been making for years, so accusing only parents and yooung teachers is, let say, inappropriate. How to manage with it? We won't do it in year or two. This is a long term process based on buliding close relation in family and more respcect for teachers.

  14. Violence in school should be punished because it's really serious. And we should take care of that problem because ignoring it can cause a lot of harm.

  15. To Asia: I don't agree. My brother was at such school, for boys only, and they weren't less aggressive than others.
I think Kalina is right to say that we should eliminate each kind of agression- even the verbal aggression (which can cause big troubles also). I believe it's lack of authorities which provoke young to such behavior. So it's true that teachers should strive to be respected (do you remember "Dangerous Minds"? I think it's a great example to quote here ;))

  16. I am agree with Judyta. I don;t think that schools only for girls and only for boys is good way to contend school violence it could have opposing result and if for example girl went whole live for school only for girls she can have difficulty in her future live with communication. Violence in school is big problem but I don't know if exist one way of solve this problem. Maybe respect - children for teachers and teachers for children too - is good opportunity for start.

  17. I think the paramount importance is in education of parents. I think the worst thing is stress-free upbringing. School violence is become a serious problem. Aggression is often the cause of such education.
