Money

Nowadays we live in a world where money become a basic part of our live. Everything is centers on money. We wake up at 7 a.m and go to work in order to earn one's living, than we go to the market and spend it. I've found some interesting money facts:

* The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produces 38 million notes a day with a face value of approximately $541 million.

* 95% of the notes printed each year are used to replace notes already in circulation. 48% of the notes printed are $1 notes.

* The U.S. Department of the Treasury first issued paper currency of the United States in 1862 as a result of a shortage of coins and the need to finance the Civil War.

* During the Civil War period, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was called upon to print paper notes in denominations of 5 cents, 1 cents, 25 cents, and 50 cents. The reason for this is that people hoarded coins because of their intrinsic value which created a drastic shortage of circulating coins.

* In 1929, the size of currency was reduced to about 2/3's of its former size when production was converted to 12-subject plates. The familiar portraits and back designs of our currency were also established at that time.

* A stack of currency one mile high would contain over 141&Mac218;2 million notes.

* The approximate weight of a currency note is .032 troy ounces (12 ounces to a pound.) There are 490 notes in a pound.

* If you had 10 billion $1 notes and spent one every second of every day, it would require 317 years for you to go broke.

* Currency paper is composed of 25% linen and 75% cotton. Red and blue synthetic fibers of various lengths are distributed evenly throughout the paper. Prior to World War I the fibers were made of silk.

* Have you ever wondered how many times you could fold a piece of currency before it would tear? About 4,000 double folds (first forward and then backwards) are required before a note will tear.

* The following information regarding the average life of a Federal Reserve Note was provided by the Federal Reserve System - please note that the life of a note depends on its denomination:

    $ 1 ...............18 months
    $ 5 ................ 2 Years
    $ 10................ 3 Years
    $ 20 .............. 4 Years
    $ 50 ............... 9 Years
    $100 ...............9 Years

* Our present sized currency measures 2.61 inches wide by 6.14 inches long, and the thickness is .0043 inches. If each currency note printed was laid end to end, they would stretch around the earth's equator approximately 24 times. Larger sized notes in circulation before 1919 measured 3.125 inches by 7.4218 inches.

* The 100 dollar note has been the largest denomination of currency in circulation since 1969.

* The obverse and reverse of the Great Seal of the United States appeared in a currency design for the first time when the $1 Silver Certificate. Series 1935, was issued. The Seal dates back to 1782 -- before the Constitution.

* The legend, "In God We Trust," became a part of the design of United States currency in 1957 and has appeared on all currency since 1963.

* The largest note ever printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing was the $100,000 Gold Certificate, Series 1934. These notes were printed from December 18, 1934 through January 9, 1935 and were issued by the Treasurer of the United States to Federal Reserve Banks only against an equal amount of gold bullion held by the Treasury. These notes were used for transactions between FRBs and were not circulated among the general public.

* The origin of the "$" sign has been variously accounted for, however, the most widely accepted explanation is that the symbol is the result of evolution, independently in different places, of the Mexican or Spanish "P's" for pesos, or piastres, or pieces of eight. The theory, derived from a study of old manuscripts, is that the "S" gradually came to be written over the "P," developing a close equivalent of the "$" mark. It was widely used before the adoption of the United States dollar in 1785.

* Contrary to popular belief, the automobile pictured on the back of the $10 note is not a Model "T" Ford. It is merely a creation of the designer of the bill.

* The hands of the clock in the steeple of Independence Hall on the reverse of the $100 Federal Reserve Note are set at approximately 4:10.

* Martha Washington is the only woman whose portrait has appeared on a U.S. currency note. It appeared on the face of the $1 Silver Certificate of 1886 and 1891, and the back of the $1 Silver Certificate of 1896.

* During Fiscal Year 1995, it cost approximately 4 cents per note to produce 9.7 billion U.S. paper currency notes.

And how about you? Do you attach importance to money?

  1. Of course money is important in our lifes, unfortunately sometimes too important. I used to save almost all my money when I was younger but then I realised that I don't have any use of it! Now I try to be reasonable. I'm not spendthrift but if I really want or need something and I have money, I buy it. Nowadays our lifes are subordinated to the money; we learn because we want to have a good job, we're working because we want to earn money. It's common treatment but in my opinion not always good. When I've decided what to study I haven't thought about my future salary. I just want to do what I love... Maybe some day I'll regret my decision but we never know it for sure ;)

  2. Money in the life of the man is important but not most important. What for me money how I am tired and soon I will die? Each of us likes the luxury: good clothes, jewellery, departures... who in order to from us wouldn't to have money like of ice? I have every of us plans what with them would do. But whether they would be enough, or really they can to replace everything? In my opinion no, because there are values as frends and love which it isn't possible buy.

  3. Nowadays money is important in ours life. Some people say that money isn't the most important things in life. Of course, they are right. But money make ours life easier and it help us to do things, which without money will be impossible. Money also allow to lead a worthy life. We know that money cannot replace us a health, friends or family, so we should look at money from distance.

  4. It was said that money can't give happiness, but note that this always say those who have them or those who do not have any opportunity to completely. Once said that without money we can do only one thing – debts :))
    And I think that money make life easier, but it doesn't mean that life becomes simple.

  5. Money is indispensable.
    The most important is to remember that it should be in our service, not inversely. The thing is also to see and establish a border between spending money and throwing them away.

  6. Of course money is important but I think there are many things which are more desired. Some people belive that they can buy health, friends love, respect etc. In my opinion it isn't true. such "friends", such "respect" wouldn't be their. It would be "respect" of their fortune, "love" of their expensive cars etc. If they lose their money they will lose all that things. They will stay alone, only with... debts.

  7. I agree, that money, although they're important, aren't the most important thing in the life. They aren't the purpose of it - or shouldn't be. Of course, it's possible, if only someone is good enough, to study something completely uninteresting for he/she, don't have time for friends and family and become frustrated, disappointed, but well-earning person, but I'm not sure, if it's worth it.

  8. I agree with all opinion above, but I like show you sth diffrent. Every day someone wins on lottery a lot of cash and do you know how many of them invest that money and don't waste it? Only 20%, rest of them buys expensive cars, bulit houses or share with family members and after a year they have the same amount of money which they got before the winning (sometimes they have less). This is a proof that people don't respect cach which came easy and don't have idea about savings and investitions. So if you would like to be rich, don't count on lottery.

  9. Oscar Wilde said that there is only one kind of man who think about money more often than the rich - the poor. And that's why I'd like to be rich - to be free of permanent thinking about making, saving, spending and wasting money. I'd rather treat money like way to make my dreams come true, not like the prime value.

  10. Yes, even Bill Gates "attached importance to money", but now when he's rich he can afford luxury of just spending it, running own charity
    and just doesn't care that much.
    In other hand some say poor people doesn't care about money and they start when the get richier

  11. I think that the clue is having ENOUGH of money. And 'enough' has different meaning for everyone. If we don't have to think all the time 'if I had more money..' it's easier to be happy.

  12. Thanks to money we can make thousand thinds... But... if we don't enough money for something, we start to concoct. Tnen it borns the best ideas. For example: one of the famous polish writer, Prus, started to write because he didn't have money for studies :)

  13. My parents always remind me that money isn't the most important thing in human's life. They underline that living without money is horrible but, on the other hand, they warn me not to focus to much on earning it. The best solution is, as Ola said, to have 'enough' money and live happily.

  14. Money in a modern world is a gain of millions of people but the truth is they are only trying to get stabilization and peace. And that is what for example a simple fisherman has without a luxuries and extravagations. Although I must say that money is a must for living a dignified life without constant worrying about you and your family.

  16. Money is important. It is said that money can't give us hapiness but I think that it is not true. If we use our money wisely they can give us hige hapiness and can make our lives a lot easier. Maybe our life shouldn't be focused onlu on earning money byt we can't deny that isn't important part of it.

  17. I think that in our modern life money are important. I also agree that it's not true that money can't give us hapiness, they can but only when we know what to do with them. Money are good because thay give us independence...

  18. Nowadays money are realy important in our live but in my opinion in most situations they are too important. In a pursuit for a money we forget about ourselfs and about things which make us happy. I also can't say that money don't give happines, mayby not by themselfs, but when we have money we have less troubles how live in normal level. I think that it is the most important to find a balance between "ourselfs" and moneys.

  19. Money money money - everywhere money. We can start to think that money is everything. Many people think that, but it isn't true. For example this presentation. Who know this interesting facts? Nobody. Everybody want to have money, but they don't know anything about it. This is exeple that money isn't everything. It is needed, important because without it we can't do anything. Of course if we want buy something we must have money, but we never when spend our money( which we earn ) we think about symbol or history of money. Why? It is really interesting.

  20. Nowadays everything is circle about topic of money. Of course we need money to our life. But in my opinion there are so many thing much more important than money, for example our family, healthy, etc. But sometimes we have to have money to recover when we very ill. It is strange but we can't do anything with that. Everybody should spent his money very wisely.

  21. First of all, I disagree with sentence that Bill Gates is the richest man in the world. Apparently, according to Forbes, the richest person in the world in 2010 is a Mexican called Carlo Slim Helu. According to IMF statistics his wealth of $53.5bn is roughly equal to the GDP of both Sudan $57bn and Slovenia $54bn (ranked 69th in list of GDP by country 2008). Bill Gates is on the second position - US $53 billion.
    Do I attach importance to money? Having some money is not a bad thing but we have to remember that money can't buy the most important values such a feelings -love, friendship and our health. They can only buy THINGS and meet the needs of first-order.

  22. It's true that money doesn't bring happiness, but it helps! Having money one can be independent and enjoy the life without worries of the future. We all need some money, that’s obvious. But often we are so wrapped up in our ran for it that we forget what the main aim should be. That’s why sometimes I think that it’s impossible to enjoy the life with too much money as well as with no money. What still doesn’t disturb my dreams of having fortune.

  23. I agree taht everything is centers on money.It is very sad. We want to earn more at work, we want to spend more money. More...more...more...
    Acording to me money doesn't bring happiness

  24. Of course money are important in oure lifes. But we should remember about more important things in oure life. Money gives young people independent and help start adult life. Money only should helps us to attain to target but not to be a target in life.
