Healthy lifestyle

There is more then one aspect of what is called a ‘healthy lifestyle’. A healthy lifestyle is often associated solely with a low-fat diet. It is also quite common to see people jog in the morning, and then eat junk food in the afternoon. Sleeping long hours will not have a positive effect on anyone if it is combined with bad eating habits and a sedentary way of life. Therefore, it is essential to realize that living one’s life in a healthy way cannot be limited to just one of the aspects mentioned above. It should contain all of them. Accordingly, a healthy lifestyle involves eating a nutritious diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep at night.

Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups.

You may be eating plenty of food, but your body may not be getting the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Nutrient-rich foods have vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients but are lower in calories. To get the nutrients you need, choose foods like vegetables, fruits, whole-grain products and fat-free or low-fat dairy products most often

  • Vegetables and fruits are high in vitamins, minerals and fiber — and they’re low in calories. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables may help you control your weight and your blood pressure.
  • Unrefined whole-grain foods contain fiber that can help lower your blood cholesterol and help you feel full, which may help you manage your weight.
  • Eat fish at least twice a week. Recent research shows that eating oily fish containing omega-3 fatty acids (for example, salmon, trout, and herring) may help lower your risk of death from coronary artery disease.

Physical Activity in Your Daily Life:

Play and recreation are important for good health. Look for opportunities such as these to be active and have fun at the same time:

  • Plan family outings and vacations that include physical activity (hiking, backpacking, swimming, etc.)
  • See the sights in new cities by walking, jogging or bicycling.
  • Make a date with a friend to enjoy your favourite physical activities. Do them regularly.
  • Play your favourite music while exercising, something that motivates you.
  • Dance with someone or by yourself. Take dancing lessons. Hit the dance floor on fast numbers instead of slow ones.
  • Join a recreational club t hat emphasizes physical activity.
  • At the beach, sit and watch the waves instead of lying flat. Better yet, get up and walk, run or fly a kite.
  • When golfing, walk instead of using a cart.
  • Play singles tennis or racquet ball instead of doubles.
  • At a picnic, join in on badminton instead of croquet.
  • At the lake, rent a row boat instead of a canoe.

Nordic walking
Nordic walking is defined as fitness walking with specially designed poles. It evolved from an off-season ski-training activity known as sk

i walking, hill bounding or ski striding to become a way of exercising year-round. Ski walking and hill bounding with poles has been practiced for decades as dry land training for competitive cross-country skiing. Ski coaches saw the success of world-class cross-country skiers who used ski poles in the summer for ski walking and hill bounding, and it became a staple of off-season Nordic ski training. Hikers with knee pain discovered they could walk more powerfully with a pair of trekking poles, often eliminate or reduce hip, knee, and foot pain, and backpackers found relief from painful backs when using poles.

Plastic surgery

Plastic surgery is important part of the medicine. Generally it's to correct body or restoration of form and function. 'Plastic' means 'to shape' and original intention has been rebuilding diseased part of limbs, face or skin.

Nowadays plastic surgery becames more and more popular and accessible although often it is painful and expensive. It's imperative to remember change a really good and safe hospital or clinic because this kind of surgery could be a bit dangerous - the infections are frequent.

Why people decide to do plastic surgery?
Reasons could be various.
Some people want to correct their body because they aren't satisfied with their surface.
Good semblance is very important especially foractors, actrees and models. It makes they have some kind of obsession about improving their body.
Plastic surgeries are very popular in Hollywood but not only. For instance - Venezuela is called 'forge of beauty' because 40 000 women make breast augumentation there every year and 30% women have the implants. All models from Venezuela have to make plastic surgery if they want to exist in show buisness. It makes each all are so similar.

There is Hannelys Quintero - Miss Venezuela 2007. Do you think her prettiness is natural?

But sometimes a little interference of body is necessary. Especially when somebody is casualty or has a failure which is cause of an illness. Plastic surgery is indispensable if someone has a scar. Then surgeons could make miracles.

The plastic surgery has been known just BC but it makes so popular and common in XX century. Sometimes Good look helps to make career in show buisness, but results of changes could be surprising...

Who looks better than before surgery? Is surface really such important?

The biggest organisation which goes into this part of medicine is American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Look: http://www.plasticsurgery.org/

Reality shows

Why are people watching reality shows?

A lot of people become addicted to such shows as Survivor, Amazing Race, and Big Brother or America’s got talent, etc. So what interesting is in these type of broadcasts?
Real life, unscripted TV shows bring drama, comedy, or romance into people's homes, many people watch reality for the fun of it. They can watch how someone: finds their true love, wins a singing career or get a lot of money.

Popular reality shows as for example: “American Idol!” (where contestants compete by singing to get a career and then become an idol to millions of adoring fans), “Bachelor” (a guy chooses the perfect girl over many others) or “Fear factor” (where people take risks on to win a lot of money) are loved by televiewers, because they can imagine that they also could become famous thanks to these programs (no matter if they have any skills or not). The message of reality television is that ordinary people can become so important that millions will watch them. And the secret thrill of many of those viewers is the thought that perhaps next time, the new celebrities might be them.

Is the reality TV real?

One of the attractions of reality television is the supposed "reality" of it (unscripted and unplanned situations and reactions). One of the ethical problems of reality tv is the fact that it isn't nearly as "real" as it pretends to be. Some VH1 and MTV shows are almost totally scripted and every reality show has to have some sort of set up for production. But for the majority of reality shows the characters are encouraged to be themselves. When production encourages characters to talk about something, confront someone, or address a particular topic, that directing makes people more real than they otherwise would be.

http://hyerstandard.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/reality-tv-300x258.jpg

In many "reality" programs, we can discern a pattern of "characters" that isn't very far different from the stock characters found in fictional programming. So it can help perpetuate stereotypes, there's always the sweet and naive person from a small town looking to make it big while still retaining small-town values.

There's the party girl or guy who's always looking for a good time and who shocks those around them. There's the aforementioned evil black woman or man with an attitude - and the list goes on.

When the reality TV crossing the borders of good taste?

The primary basis for many of these shows (but not all) seems to be to put people in painful, embarrassing, and humiliating situations for the rest of us to watch – and probably laugh at and be entertained by.

The reality TV shows wouldn't be made if we didn't watch them, so it seems that we like this kind of entertainment. We find it entertaining or maybe we find it so shocking that we are simply unable to turn away. But where is the moment when reality TV totally crosses the borders of good taste? Do you remember Jade Goody (the 27-year old celebrity of the third edition of Big Brother)?
She had dedicated the last phase of her life in going public with her battle with cancer in an attempt to make people suffering from the same disease stronger and realise that they are not to be discriminated because they have been striked by cancer. Jade Goody became popular through the popular Big Brother TV show. She first appeared in public on the third series of the reality show that was broadcasted by Channel 4 in 2002.
http://images.smh.com.au/ftsmh/ffximage/2009/03/04/jadegoody_wideweb__470x376,0.jpg

In 2008, Goody made a breakthrough appearance on the Indian version of Big Brother called Bigg Boss, but was forced to withdraw rather early as she was diagnosed to suffer from cervical cancer which turned out to be fatal.

On 1 September 2008 Goody had been informed that her cervical cancer had become life threatening and she would have to fight it with chemotherapy.

On February 2009 Max Clifford which was in charge for the media affairs of Goody’s personality has confirmed that her cancer had moved to her liver, bowel and groin. Goody, in front of cameras, married Jack Tweed on 22 February 2009 but died, approximately one month later, on 22 March 2009.

What do you think about that? Did Jade Goody sell herself and her privacy? Or maybe wasn’t it wrong if she saw in it the higher purpose and she did it to gain the money for her sons or wanted to make people suffering from the same disease stronger?

And what is your opinion about reality shows?
Do you watch them or have your favourite ones?

Photography and science

Today a lot of people have a camera and take photos - black and white, sepia or full of coulors. In our albums we have photos with family, friends, animals, buildings and so on... Some people became profesionalists and their pictures are a pieces of art.

But we have also a lot of photos in science.

Astronomy is one of the oldest scientific studies. It uses special physical methods to discovers new objects and studies "old". Astronomy is connected with physic, biology, chemistry and metheorology. Also the computers systems and graphics take part in this science. Informations from telescopes (e.g. from the best known Hubble's Telescope) go first to the computers, there are checked and then some of theme published.

"2009 has been declared by the UN to be the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). The focus is on enhancing the public’s understanding and engagement with astronomy."

Without observatory we can't see everything on the sky. But in my opinion we should better know our universe. To make this easier (and to take part in IYA2009) I want to present you few interesting photos with short comments.

One of my favourites pictures is a photo of solar eclipse.

During these eclipse Earth (or some parts of Earth) is in the Moon’s shadow. In this few minutes we cannot see the sun, only the bright corona - a white halo of solar gases.

In the other hand, when we observe lunar eclipse, Moon is in the Eath’s shadow and we see it red.

Sun is only one in our solar system, but we see it almost every day. Comets are rare, although on the sky is plenty of theme. Then why

we can’t observe comets each night? True is that... we

observe, but by telescopes in observatories. Each year astronoms discovers about a hundred of new comets! They are made of rock, metal and ice, and most often have two tails: ion and dust tail. In the picture of Comet West we can see both.

The next of astronomical photos schows galaxies. Galaxy is a large group of stars, dust and gases. Our Galaxy was named Milky Way by Romans. Milky Way is a typical spiral galaxy, bright with the light of new stars.

The next class are elliptical galaxies, the most common in

universe, which cannot “produce” new stars. They contain younger stars in centre and the outer parts are occupied by old and “dark”.

The third category are irregular galaxies, normally small and difficult to detect. Old and new stars are mixed with gases and dust. The best known irragular galaxis are the Small and Large Magellenic Clouds, that are our nearst neighbours.

On the end - supernova. Johannes Kepler in 1604 saw the last supernova before the invention of the telescope. The next was photographed in Februar 1987, during observation of Large Magellanic Cloud. This supernova quickly terned coulor and cooled. But what is more interesting in March it brightened again and this burst reached towards the end of May, when it was as luminous as billions of suns!

What do you think about astronomic pictures? Do you know some else interesting science photos?

FOOD FESTIVALS AROUND THE WORLD

Ludlow Food & Drink Festival

The festival celebrates quality food and drink and encourages visitors
to buy local food that tastes and looks good. At the heart of the festivals being is a passion for local food and wine producers which underpins every event that takes place during the festival weekend.
Festival organisers and volunteers work hard each year to bring new producers and fresh produce to this highly successful event. In fact the first day often proves
so popular that producers work through the night
in preparation for an even busier next day.
A particular favourite is the famous Sausage Trail, with local butchers rising to the challenge and bringing along the best new sausages
of the year. Visitors can then sample and vote for their favourite. Whilst
the atmospheric Ludlow Castle is the setting where visitors can sample most of the foodie delights, there is also an Ale Trail that gets visitors
out and about around Ludlow making the whole town seemingly a part
of the festivities.
Visitors can sample old favourites like local beers and sausages
as well as more ‘high end’ produce. But the event is not just for affluent gourmets, whatever your budget or taste, there is something to please every pocket…and stomach!

Mitchelstown Food Festival

The Mitchelstown Food Festival has been run successfully and has gone from strength to strength
over the past six years. Mitchelstown, which
is affectionately and traditionally known as ‘the home
of good food’ is set at the foothills of the Galtee Mountains, in the beautiful countryside of Ireland’s Blackwater Valley. With its reputation for good food and great festivals, it is the perfect setting for a food festival. The rich resources from the surrounding farmland has made the festival a celebration of authentic and locally produced food.

This year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever and will focus
on the promotion of Irish Pork as the main theme. For generations, Mitchelstown has been synonymous with the production of high quality pork products and this will be highlighted and promoted.

This action packed weekend will include the following main activities:

Workshop: Irish Pork from Farm to Fork
This workshop is open to anybody with an interest in food and will include talks from a local pig farmer, artisan pork & bacon product producers, butchery demonstration from a local butcher and cookery demonstration using pork by a local chef.

The Mitchelstown Lions Club will hold their annual family fun day
in conjunction with the Mitchelstown Food Festival in the Square
in Mitchelstown with fun and games for all the family. This will be followed in the evening by a large scale open air Bringing Home the Bacon BBQ
on Lower Cork Street with live music and entertainment for all the family.

A large Food Producer’s Market showcasing local and national food products will be held at a 20,000 sq ft indoor premises at the Coolnanave Business Park on the main Dublin road (across from the Firgrove Hotel). There will be a dedicated area for Pork & Bacon food producers. This
is an excellent venue in which to exhibit as proved by the success
of the 2008 festival.

Cereal Festival and World's Longest Breakfast Table

Battle Creek's (USA, Michigan) annual breakfast, served at 159 picnic tables strung out along Michigan Avenue in the middle of the downtown business district, is a long-standing tradition, dating back 53 years. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the town of Battle Creek.
Although the festival has declined in activities and attendance over the past few years, the focus isn't on attracting large numbers to break the world's record, but on bringing people together as a community. "This annual gathering is a unique opportunity for the entire town to sit down at the same table and share a meal together," reminds Battle Creek's Mayor Mark Behnke.
Business owner Bill Morris, likens the event to a family reunion, "The world's longest breakfast table is Battle Creek's annual family reunion, where people who haven't seen each other since last year's cereal festival are able to reconnect in a relaxed and festive atmosphere."

The Mid-Autumn Festival

The Mid-Autumn Festival, (also known as the Moon Festival, Zhongqiu Festival), is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people
and Vietnamese people (even though they celebrate it differently), dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty.
It was first called Zhongqiu Jie (literally "Mid-Autumn Festival")
in the Zhou Dynasty. In Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines,
it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month
in the Chinese calendar, which is usually around late September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake,
of which there are many different varieties.
Farmers celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season on this date. Traditionally on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes
and pomelos together. Accompanying the celebration, there are additional cultural or regional customs, such as:
Eating mooncakes outside under the moon, putting pomelo rinds on one's head, carrying brightly lit lanterns, lighting lanterns on towers, floating sky lanterns, burning incense in reverence to deities including Chang'e, planting Mid-Autumn trees, collecting dandelion leaves and distributing them evenly among family members, fire Dragon Dances.
In Taiwan, since the 1980s, barbecuing meat outdoors has become
a widespread way to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Homowo Festival

Homowo (which means make a fun of hunger) in Ghana African people have always had at the time of the harvest. In Ghana the Yam Festival (Homowo) lasts three days. The festival begins with a cleansing ceremony to honor family members who have died. Farmers give thanks to the gods who ensure a good harvest. Twins and triplets are honored during this time as a special gift from God.
Yams are an important crop in Ghana. During Homowo, they are taken from the ground and are carried to the village. Then they are blessed
by the chief. Special foods made from yams are served. Mashed yams with hard boiled eggs are an important part of the festival. People also eat Kpekpele which is made from corn meal and palm oil. During Homowo people wear a kind of toga made from kente cloth which is brightly colored. The festival ends with a big feast. People dance and sing to the sounds
of drums. feast. People dance and sing to the sounds of drums.
